As of DaVinci Resolve version 17.4.5, Blackmagic has added the ability to set the output color space in DaVinci YRGB projects.

This article describes how this setting affects the Dolby Vision content mapping process and how the output color space setting should be set up properly.

When the color science is set to DaVinci YRGB, the Output color space setting “tags” or identifies the color space and gamma output from the timeline. This allows users to use their preferred color space aware grading tools and operations by setting the timeline color space and gamma to any combination they want, and then to manage the output conversion to an intended color space & gamma themselves using LUTs, OFX, or hand-mapping based color management.
 

When performing Dolby Vision analysis and trims with the iCMU, the output color space and gamma must always be set to match the color encoding which may or may not be equal to the Dolby Vision mastering display selection. This setting defines how the iCMU interprets the output from the timeline and thus affects the Dolby Vision content mapping process.

 




When performing quality control and playback on previously encoded Dolby Vision content using the iCMU, the output color space and gamma must always be set to match the encoded image color space and gamma, while the Dolby Vision Mastering Display should be set to match Mastering Display found in the existing Dolby Vision metadata.

When your timeline and intended output color space are the same, ensure that you set the Output color space setting to Same as timeline to prevent unintended color shifts when exporting or using the Dolby Vision iCMU.


 

The setting „Output color space“:

• sets the color space tag and gamma tag as metadata when exporting
• does not apply this setting as a transformation during monitoring/grading
  • Regardless of how you set the output color space, the HDR grade will look correct
• is not applied when clips are analyzed with Dolby Vision analysis
• is applied as metadata when tone mapping preview is enabled
  • Setting a different color space than the appropriate color space and gamma settings of your Dolby Vision mastering display will produce visually incorrect results
