RxPlayer is an open-source media player library developed by Canal+ that uses reactive programming principles (based on RxJS) for its internal architecture. It supports MPEG-DASH and, to a limited extent, Smooth Streaming. RxPlayer is valued for its clean API, strong TypeScript support, and its representation filtering system that allows fine-grained control over which representations are considered for playback.

Project URL: https://github.com/canalplus/rx-player

Advantages:

Clean, well-documented API
Representation filtering for fine-grained codec control
Strong TypeScript support
Reactive architecture for complex state management

Limitations:

MPEG-DASH only (no HLS support)
Smaller community compared to dash.js or Shaka Player
Less extensive Dolby-specific configuration options compared to dash.js
Limited subtitle support
FairPlay integration may require additional implementation effort

Support for Dolby Technologies

RxPlayer supports Dolby technologies through its representation filter mechanism and standard MSE/EME integration. It parses DASH manifests including supplementalCodecs attributes and codec strings for Dolby Vision and Dolby Audio formats.

Example Player Configuration

The example below shows the minimum setup required to initialize RxPlayer and begin playback.

Note: The sample code in this article is provided as an example implementation and should not be considered production-ready. Before deployment, it should be reviewed, tested, and adapted to the specific requirements of your application and environment.

<video id="video" controls></video>
<script src="rx-player.js"></script>
<script>
const player = new RxPlayer({
    videoElement: document.querySelector('#video')
});

player.loadVideo({
    transport: 'dash',
    url: 'https://example.com/content/manifest.mpd';,
    autoPlay: true
});
</script>

Configuring DRM

player.loadVideo({
    transport: 'dash',
    url: 'https://example.com/protected/manifest.mpd';,
    autoPlay: true,
    keySystems: [
        {
            type: 'com.widevine.alpha',
            getLicense: (message) =>
                fetch('https://wv.example.com/license';, {
                    method: 'POST',
                    body: message
                }).then(res => res.arrayBuffer()),
            getLicenseConfig: { retry: Infinity, timeout: -1 }
        },
        {
            type: 'com.microsoft.playready.recommendation',
            getLicense: (message) =>
                fetch('https://pr.example.com/license';, {
                    method: 'POST',
                    body: message
                }).then(res => res.arrayBuffer()),
            getLicenseConfig: { retry: Infinity, timeout: -1 }
        }
    ]
});

Representation Filtering

RxPlayer provides a representationFilter callback that is invoked for each representation in the manifest. This allows you to exclude representations based on codec, resolution, or any other criteria.

player.loadVideo({
    transport: 'dash',
    url: 'https://example.com/content/manifest.mpd';,
    autoPlay: true,
    representationFilter: (representation, context) => {
        // Exclude Dolby Vision tracks if desired
        if (representation.codecs.some(c => c.startsWith('dvh'))) {
            return false;
        }
        return true;
    }
});
