Loading a license key is one of the first things you need to do if you are looking to tailor the way that your content is displayed on different display devices, including having greater control over the creation of SDR from a Dolby Vision master.  It's possible to create great Dolby Vision content without a Dolby Vision license, although without the license the metadata will be configured automatically and you won't have the option to tailor this to your preferences.
