What is Stereoscopic Video (3D Video)?

Stereoscopic Video (3D Video) is a technique for creating depth perception by presenting a pair of two-dimensional images to the viewer. The left 2D image is presented to the left eye and the right 2D image is presented to the right eye simultaneously. When viewed, the human brain perceives the images as a single 3D view, giving the viewer the perception of 3D depth. This technique is based on simulating the binocular disparity, the difference in image location of an object seen by the left and right eyes, naturally resulting from the eyes' horizontal separation.

Apple Specifications for Stereoscopic Video (including profile 20)

Apple has published several new documents about the delivery of 3D videos to visionOS and Apple Vision Pro, which are relevant to the delivery of Dolby Vision profile 20 to Apple devices such as Apple Vision Pro.

For delivery to the Apple ecosystem, the 3D video content must be encoded using Multiview HEVC (MV-HEVC) and packaged in an MP4 file with a Video Extended Usage box. The content can then be delivered using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) by including it in multivariant playlists that include both 3D and 2D variants of the content, allowing the same playlist to be used with other Apple devices as well. More details about the required HLS signaling (such as use of a new REQ-VIDEO-LAYOUT attribute) are provided in the most recent version of the HLS specification and in Apple’s HLS Authoring Specification for Apple Devices (and its appendices).
