Binaural 2.0 vs Speakers - Volume for objects in Ltr Lrs Rts Rrs
I've got the "whole thing" working in Protools and I'm exited about the futur of music. Before building a 7.1.4. room I'm playing with Binaural and headphones.
When panning an object to the back or the top it looses it's volume (binaural) and I was wondering if this also happens in a true speaker setup. How are they calibrated?
Or to put it the other way round. When I want an object to have always the same volume when it is flying a 360 circle on the ceiling in a true Cinema do I have to automate the volume fader to keep the volume constant?

    Hi,

Great that you have all this running. This won't happen in a speaker setup. Panning around the periphery or in any plane equidistant from the listener will be equal power. You shouldn't need to automate the volume to keep the volume constant when panning in a plan assuming that the object is equidistant and the object size is constant when monitoring with properly calibrated speakers in a 7.1.4 monitoring format. The Binaural Renderer uses a headphone related transfer function that can be perceived differently by individuals based on their head size/shape and other characteristics as well as the headphones used. It is important to do a final mix pass listening to speakers for this reason. For stereo there are automatic trims used in conjunction with downmix settings. These are user variable in the Trim and Downmix Controls window.

    I hope this helps.

    Great Adam, got you.

Are these settings just for individual listening/mixing or will they be in the Metadata for Apple, TIDAL etc...

Downmix information is carried in the codec the delivers Atmos but I believe both services require and deliver a separate stereo mix. If you deliver stereo re-rendered from the Dolby Atmos Renderer then you have a choice if downmix settings are applied to monitoring and re-renders or separate settings are used for re-renders.
