L5 metadata
Hi guys, i’m working in this project wiht an aspect ratio 2.0 but i have a lot of sequence with 4:3 aspect ratio. I know i can change my aspect ratio and work by shot but i just read that L5 metadata don’t support both X and Y

“For shots that are BOTH letterboxed AND side-matted/ pillarboxed (i.e. both X and Y active image dimensions are less than the full canvas resolution), Dolby does not currently support accurately capturing and reading L5 metadata values to account for both X and Y coordinates”

I’m thinking to use some kind of matte to work with these sequence and not to use lift positive trim values.

But maybe someone can help me and give me a better workflow. I’m using DVR 17.4.

    Thank you for reaching out to us.

    I am not sure what you mean by "L5 metadata don’t support both X and Y". Resolve supports dynamic L5 metadata. so the ultimate image aspect ratio for the specific shot in L5 would be X/Y.

    For the 4:3 sequence or whatever special aspect ratio you would have on your timeline, the correct workflow would be:

    1. Specify the aspect ratio for the 4:3 shots in Sizing -> Output Sizing -> clip
    2. Apply Dolby Vision analysis

    You will see the customized aspect ratio information in L5 under the metadata entry of the specific shot as the example below. The first value is the canvas aspect ratio and the second value is the image aspect ratio.

    I found the info in a Netflix partner help center (

    My show is 2.0 and then i have inside the 2.0 aspect ratio a 4:3 sequence. So that's why i ask about X / Y:

    "For shots that are BOTH letterboxed AND side-matted/ pillarboxed (i.e. both X and Y active image dimensions are less than the full canvas resolution), Dolby does not currently support accurately capturing and reading L5 metadata values to account for both X and Y coordinates. While some color grading/ mastering platforms will accurately identify the correct active image, they may not save these values within the DoVi L5 metadata in a way that can be interpreted to correctly apply color mapping, ignoring the mattes both top/ bottom and left/ right.
    L5 metadata, if supported by the color grading/ mastering platform, should be applied based on X (horizontal) OR Y (vertical) active image aspect ratio, but not both.
    Positive lift values should be avoided in the trim pass to ensure shifting/ elevated black levels do not occur in the mattes."

    I used a matte to apply the 4:3 (inside my 2.0 Aspect Ratio) and then i analyze my shoots and didn't use lift possitive values. My question is if this workflow could get a QC fail from my vendor.

    Of course if i watch my sdr version it looks good. The question is about .xml workflow and QC.

      Just to clarify "I used a matte to apply the 4:3 (inside my 2.0 Aspect Ratio) and then i analyze my shoots and didn't use lift possitive values." i made a compound clip with my matte and footage so everything stay at video track 1.

    Your workflow is all good. You will not get a QC failure. It's good to go.
