Question about DME Beds + Mix Printmaster
I work in post TV and film and am using DME beds for the first time in the DAR. Previously I only used some sort of surround bed in the DAR. Never making/ sending discrete DME outputs to it. I'm now noticing that when I send my pro tools DX, MX, and FX outputs to the appropriate beds in the DAR I hear them. It never occurred to me that I couldn't mute the discrete beds if I didn't want to monitor them. That's fine until I also try to send the full mix out of Pro tools to the DAR full Mix printmaster bed. I'm hearing the DME mix and the Full mix at the same time. So, whats the deal here? Am I making a monitoring mistake? Should I not be sending a full mix PM to the DAR if I intend to create discrete DME beds in the DAR (because I can create a PM as a re-render?), or am I missing something else completely? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

You are correct that you cannot mute beds in the Renderer. Whatever is set to the Renderer will be audible (and encoded from the Atmos master) so a a full mix and stem beds should not be sent to the Renderer simultaneously.

If you send stems to the Renderer (either a bed, or beds and objects) they can be assigned to groups (n the input configuration) which can be combined as needed when generating channel based re-renders.

Depending on your desired workflow it may make sense to create masters in two passes. All stems (except what is needed for a fully filled M&E) sent to the Renderer which can be used as an encoding master. And another with all the stems needed to create a fully filled M&E which is just used for creating channel-based stems as needed.

It might be worth having a look at section 10.3 of the Post Production training at
learning.dolby.com to see this illustrated with screen grabs.
