Create Profile 8.4 for Vimeo with manual trims for SDR rec.709
Hi, I'm a cinematographer trying to get a usable profile 8.4 file for use on Vimeo. My professional colorist has made a beautiful DV HDR grade and very necessary manual Primary / Secondary DV trims. I would like those trims to carry through to Vimeo instead of being "automatically generated"

I'm trying to have the same level of control I'm accustomed to when delivering DV to Netflix.

Is this possible at all? Is there a different suggested format to get a DV file with manual SDR rec. 709 trim metadata included onto Vimeo?
Is there a way to inject DV trim metadata XML file into a Profile 8.4 file?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Luke. At this stage Vimeo supports Dolby Vision as Profile 8.4. 8.4 auto-generates metadata on export and cannot transport your trims made. In order to respect your trims, Vimeo would need to enable support for Profile 5 like major OTT services do.

    Hi Michael,

In the FAQ, the description of Profile 8.4 seems to say meta data is “usually” automatic… is there a way to inject manual trims after export? Or override the automatic metadata some how?

I’m also having an issue with viewing Profile 8.4 exports on apple devices where the luminance is jumping during a shot. For example a few seconds after a cut to a shot, the overall luminance will drop or rise in the middle of the shot.

This happens viewing on Dolby Vision approved displays, (LG C1, Pro Display XDR, IPad Pro M1) as well as SDR displays (MacBook Air M1)

This issue does NOT happen when exporting Profile 8.1 or Profile 5

Can you offer any guidance on how to resolve this luminance jumping?

My intent is to embrace and push for Dolby Vision finishing on all of my projects going forward, so I’m trying to understand any and all use cases. For my current project (a short film) it worked great to grade in DV and trim for Theatrical and SDR, but the majority of people will likely see it on Vimeo, which is where I’m struggling to arrive at a good solution. I’d love for DV devices to display the HDR version in all its glory, but the SDR needs the manual trims to look right, also the luminance jumps are very distracting, and unless they can be resolved, I’ll have to settle for only using the SDR export.

Thank you for any guidance you can offer! I can share sample files if that would help get to the bottom of this.

      Hi Luke,

We got feedback on the same issue. It occasionally happens in a shot or subtitle cut in/out in the current version. We would recommend to lower the luminance of your subtitle overlay or an actual shot to 200 -300 nits. This may potentially reduce this issue. We will investigate further. We will contact you offline to see if you need further help.

For the manual trims to be incorporated into Profile 8.4 workflow. Unfortunately, there is no way to do so. Dolby Vision profile 8.4 workflow doesn't support trims currently.
