New help understanding options for 7.1.4 speaker system connected to PC
Thank you in advance for your help. Studio One recently came out with Dolby Atmos built-in. I was mixing 5.1 Surround using Cubase, and all was good. I now want to set up a 7.1.4 Atmos speaker system for mixing and monitoring. I know it is easy enough to set up the 7.1.4 using my Appllo x16 and active speakers. But, could I also use that same set for listening to streaming Atmos music and video? Or... Could I instead send the channels for 7.1.4 out via the GPU HDMI to a AVR. That would mean I would have to choice a different audio output in Studio One that goes out the HDMI. Is that even possible? This setup will cost a lot of money to put together, so I hope I can mix on it and watch Atmos movies and music through the same setup. I know slightly more than nothing as of right now. I need help. lol. I would be happy to pay to talk to someone to figure out what my options are and what the best way to go would be. Thanks

    Hi,

Unfortunately the Pro Audio and Consumer Audio paths from a PC are going to be separate.

You can use the Dolby Access functionality on PC to playback Atmos content to a home theater over HDMI. This uses a low latency encoder to get 7.1.4 over HDMI. However, there isn't a way to get 7.1.4 from a DAW output over HDMI as normal HDMI uage only carries 8 channels of PCM. Even then, I expect you might have issue with EDID from the AVR.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,
    Adam
