Does the Renderer still require a second PC?
Hi,

I have the following Computer Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i9 13900K
GPU MSi-RTX-4090 Suprim X 24GB
MB: Asus Z790 Tuff Gaming Plus Wi-Fi
Ram: 64Gb 2 X 32GB Kingston KF556C40-32
Asus Thunderbolt EX 4 Card.

(My 2nd PC has similar specs but no thunderbolt card)

My Audio Interfaces:
Apollo Twin X Duo
Apollo x16
(I also have all my powered Atmos Speakers for 7.2.4)
I also mix exclusively in the box.

As far as the Renderer goes, Do I need Anything further to run it?
Does the Renderer still require a second PC to run?
I don't need a RME AUDIO HDSP TCO card or anything like that or do I?

Thank you for the advice.

  • Sorry,
I may have jump the gun on this question.

From what I can see, you can run both your DAW and Renderer on the same PC but I hear it's going to drain your CPU's ability.
Even with mine?.... I don't know...

If you run a two PC configuration, you will need one RME HDSPe MADI card
and RME HDSPe TCO module per PC. (<--- I hope I'm correct about this$$$$ Holy Cow!)
You will also require some software to run with your hardware to channel the audio channels.
Your DAW is installed on your computer.
Renderer is installed on the remote computer (Renderer Workstation).

It seems to be much cheaper (By a few grand) to just run the Renderer on my DAW PC if it can.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

    Hi,

The Renderer running on PC is meant to run on a separate computer from the DAW with MADI or Dante I/O. There are ways to get it to work on a single PC that other on this forum has used with Jack or ASIO Pro. However, the configuration requires some fiddling and is not an officially supported workflow.

  • Thank You Adam,

Is there a list of required equipment that makes Atmos possible using different configurations?
I keep on finding myself in this "Surprise, You need to buy this now also" state.
I was hoping to find a list that I can say, ok I want to go with type "B" configuration based on the equipment I already have and that will be best financially.
I'm about $40,ooo in now and wish I can see a light at the end of the "buy everything" tunnel.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

What DAW software are you using? Pro Tools has announced plans for internal rendering, Steinberg Nuendo & Cubase, PreSonus Studio One and BlackMagic Designs Resolve already have it. If using one of these DAWs, a one PC solution is already achieved (or in the case of Pro Tools, will soon be achievable). You can mix, monitor in Atmos and export Dolby Atmos master ADM BWF files purely within the DAW. At that point the Dolby Atmos Renderer application is used on the same PC for QC, MP4 export etc standalone (generally without the DAW software running simultaneously) if at all.

If you want to use the Dolby Atmos Renderer application on a separate Atmos Renderer workstation PC with Pro Tools, Nuendo, Pyramix, or Resolve software on your DAW PC, you should look at the tested configurations listed here:
    https://professionalsupport.dolby.com/s/article/What-are-the-current-computer-OS-and-I-O-configurations-for-running-the-Dolby-Atmos-Renderer-on-a-dedicated-Workstation

That article also includes a link to the installation and configuration guide.

The best options are really to use Pro Tools Steinberg Nuendo & Cubase, PreSonus Studio One or BlackMagic Designs Resolve on a single PC and use the Dolby Atmos Renderer application on its own as needed.

    Hope this helps.

    • I'm using Ableton. I'm going to be studying Pro Tools very soon.
I'm almost ready to purchase the Fiedler's Dolby Atmos Composer as it seems to do everything on any DAW....
I don't know but it seems also it would save me money from buying MADI cards and a clock because I could run it on my DAW machine.
DAW Machine= 13900K, 64GB DDR4,4TB nvme, RTX4090. (I hope to tap into GPU audio in the near future)

I agree, If you are using Ableton on PC the Fiedler Atmos Composer is pretty the only option you have.

I don't have a lot of experience with but it is a well crafted Dolby licensed product with an Ableton specific template to get you started. Have you already checked out the demo?

    • I'm just in the middle of connecting my height speakers to my Apollo x16.
I have downloaded the demo just now but waiting to install it when my height speakers are in.
Just running the XLRs & power now as I type this.

As I learn more and more about composer, it seems it's the answer I have been looking for when trying not to purchase a further 5 grand worth of equipment to make this happen in my studio.

      Thank you.

    • I'm actually SOLD on the Dolby Atmos Composer. Purchased already.
This saves me from purchasing MADI and a clock which = Thousands of dollars saved.

      Cheers,
