Channel configurations in Renderer V5.4.1
Hi there,
I was searching for hours but couldn't find any answer nor clue. As far to my understanding ATMOS supports 9.1.6 channel format but the renderer does only support 7.1.4.
Importing a 5.1.2 ADM file doesn't provide the correct monitor configuration either. The renderer inside Nuendo shows correct processing but the external render (due to the different channel configuration) modifies everything. How does this match with the possible formats then can be selected inside a DAW (Nuendo)? I'm working on a Win11 system (just in case this has an impact for the renderer)

The Dolby Atmos Renderer application supports speaker layouts up to 9.1.6, and can use any smaller layouts by editing the Speaker tab of the Room setup window. If you are referring to the internal Renderer in Nuendo, it supports most configurations up to 9.1.6 as well.

When you say it modifies everything, what exactly are you referring to?

I'm not sure what you mean by 5.1.2 ADM file, as any ADM opened in the Dolby Atmos Renderer should be a Dolby Atmos master file, which is flexible in terms of beds and object, but the first 10 channels are always reserved for a 7.1.2 bed. Ideally an ADM master file that contains a 5.1.2 bed would use channels 1-6 for the 5.1, then channels 9-10 for the overheads. Alternatively any of those could be objects (i.e. if you are using an object bed) and would appear later in the master file.

when you are playing back a master file in the Renderer it is rendering all of the beds and objects to whatever your output format is - so the actual contents of the master file can be played back in 9.1.6, 5.1.4, etc.

My guess is that whatever is being used to author the ADM master file may be incorrectly ordering the channels in the 5.1.2 bed and making them concurrent (instead of skipping channels 7-8), which would result in the overheads instead playing in the rear surrounds. If you created this master file you should verify that you have set up your bed channels correctly.

    Hi Bennett,

Thanx for your kind answer. Full support (any speaker layout) is what I've expected. I was turning in circles by clicking through the links, but I couldn't find a latest spec update (My available PDF spec is from 2022) nor a document about recommended bed usage nor details to the External Dolby Renderer (PDF).
Anyway, I've reconfirmed the specs and links again, and it seems that I had a wrong understanding of "5.1.2" with ".2" as height speakers. (I'm not using Dolby as a standard workflow in my work). If I understand the spec correct, then a 5.1.2 system (not ATMOS enabled but with real height speakers) is treated as 7.1. If this understanding is correct, then I know where the problem on my side is. Just if you don't mind, can you let me know if I need to change the channel naming (labeling) to accurate distinguish in the Dolby Player (final playable Dolby file/AV-Receiver) between the 2 top speaker positions as front or middle?
But on the other hand, according to the spec, the 7.1 speaker layout doesn't have height speakers... Sorry, for such a basic question but I'm really confused here...
I prefer a 7.1.4 or 9.1.6, but 9.1.6 is also not supported by the external renderer (or is this a limitation of the test version, I'm currently checking out?)...
    Cheers

As I can't edit the post: Just to add an additional info:
My purpose is to create an optimized sound file for a dedicated Dolby speaker layout, not for a general 7.1.4. or 9.1.6 or higher ATMOS configuration ...

I'm not sure what you mean by spec update, but here is a link to the docs for DAR: https://customer.dolby.com/content-creation-and-delivery/dolby-atmos-renderer-v541/documentation

Here is a link to the specific section that covers how to add/remove speakers from your room configuration:
    https://customer.dolby.com/content-creation-and-delivery/dolby-atmos-renderer-v541/documentation/dolby-atmos-renderer-users-guide/setup-menus/room-setup/room-controls-and-setup-pages

I'm still not quite clear what you are trying to achieve. Are you trying to make channel check/test tone signals for discrete speaker setups?
