Dolby Atmos Renderer 5.4.1 crashes constantly with macOS Tahoe and Pro Tools 2026.4
Does this happen to anyone else? I'm getting multiple, seemingly random crashes a day with the Dolby Atmos Renderer. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to prevent this, or if you need more info to diagnose.

Thanks!

    Hi,

Sorry you are running into issues.

Can you please provide some more info:
-DAR crash logs (help > export logs)
    -Audio hardware/interfaces in use
    -Plug-ins in use
-Any particular behavior that crashes DAR
    -macOS crash log(s) for crashes
-List of core audio devices (open terminal and enter system_profiler SPAudioDataType)

Tahoe made some core audio changes that affect sample rate, something DAR is particularly sensitive to. If a device in use by DAR suddenly changes sample rate it may cause the crash.

      Hey Bennett,

Thanks for getting back. Dolby and MacOS Crash logs are below. I have been getting random dropouts from Dante as well so it could well be that the two issues are related.

Let me know what you find.

      Thanks,
      Lyman

      Setup is as follows:
      Pro Tools 2026.4
      DAR 5.4.1
      Avid MTRX
      Soundminer Monitor.

For System Audio (Not Pro Tools):
      Dante Controller 4.18.0.11
      Dante Virtual Soundcard 4.5.2.3

Unfortunately email replies don't support attachments, can you attach via the website?

Can you send over the DAR logs as well?

What are you using for the output of DAR? What other applications do you have open at the time of the crashes?

This is similar to a few issues seen previously with Tahoe. Most of them have been due to another application or driver forcing a sample rate change to the driver that DAR is using for output. In one case it was AirPods connecting to the computer, another was a zoom virtual sound driver.

Sound Minder Monitor and DVS bot merit investigation, but we will know more once we look at the DAR logs.

Sorry! Thought those uploaded as well. DAR goes through HDX via DADman. Soundminer, DVS, and Dante Controller will generally be open. Apple mail, safari, and calendar may be open as well. I am also having unresolved issues with DVS staying connected to DADman, so perhaps these issues are interrelated.
    • BennettS (Dolby Labs)

Yeah if DADman is having issues it may be killing/disconnecting the HDX driver, which if it happened during playback or recording could audio device processor overloads (which I am seeing a lot of in the logs). Some red flags in the logs:

ERROR NotificationLoggerView - Sent from BackendErrorGateway - Audio driver error The audio driver was configured with a device that is no longer available. Select valid devices in the Preferences window (DEVICES section).

ERROR RendererExecutive - Audio device buffer overflow
ERROR RendererExecutive - Audio device buffer overflow
ERROR RendererExecutive - Audio device buffer underrun
ERROR RendererExecutive - Audio device buffer underrun

There are still a lot of variables in play, would you be able to test the performance with less things running so we can try to isolate the problematic components? I would recommend disabling Soundminer and DVS for one test, and if it is still crashing, try using the mac studio speakers so we can determine if it is an issue with the HDX driver.

Got it. I can test with without everything but Soundminer - I’m up against a deadline and will need to use it pretty much nonstop for the next few weeks. Once we go to mix, I’ll test with nothing running but DAR and Pro Tools and let you know what happens.

I can also start cc’ing Brett from Audinate if these issues seem to be linked and you think it would be helpful.

        Thanks,
        Lyman

It's worth taking a look at any DADMan or Dante error logs to see if that can provide clues as to problematic devices.
